Thanks for the information . As a beginner fly fisherman I have been watching a lot of videos on RUclips. there's certain high level individuals that preach the sinking line but I feel that the floating line with a bit of weighted streamer will do me better as a beginner and keep me out of more trouble till I get proficient .

Over a couple decades exclusively fishing the small creeks of Southern California and the Eastern Sierra all I really need for a great summer/fall day are some #14-18 elk hair caddis, some #14-16 beadhead prince nymphs, maybe a few #16 red humphies and as a last resort a black ant pattern. That and a small creek and I'm set! The older I've gotten the less distance I'm able to cover so these days it's not unheard of to spend 3-4 hours exhaustively working a 200 yard stretch of creek. Hit every pocket. I spend more time observing and executing my presentation than I do actual fishing. Nothing beats planning out a presentation, noting surface and subsurface obstacles, determining the prime drift zone, how to get my fly in there, and where am I going to land the fish? Nine times out of ten I don't pull it off but that one time makes all the effort worth it. Tight lines.

You are correct! I just fly fished for the first time last week, and caught 4 trout from a creek. Bought a combo rod and reel ($40) 2 years ago, and knew barely anything about fly fishing, and it was fun. Can’t believe I didn’t fly fish years ago.

The only advise I can give on a reel is trying to get something that has an enclosed drag and bearing. That way, if it gets wet or dirty, it will still handle great.

I don't think it's a matter of which is better, I don't think it's a valid comparison at all. They're different tools to do different types of fishing. Both can catch you truckloads of fish, just in different ways. I use both, and I'll never exclusively pick one over the other.

is this the same california trip you guys did last year or is this new?

it is so tough to get into that area. I do it from the eastern side on week long trips. it's a little easier to access. my favorite ways to access the Kern are kearsarge pass, up bubbs Creek, over Forester pass, over to lake south america, down the upper Kern basin to the tyndell cutoff back over to the jmt, over Forester pass, bubbs Creek and out kearsarge pass. another is trail pass to golden trout creek, down to little Whitney meadow, down to the Kern, back up to volcano creek, over to golden trout creek and out trail pass. I've accessed it from the west side via the high sierra trail as well. much harder to hike in and out though.

The Chattahooce River is not this good, I fish north ga streams and no one I know will fish the hooch for trout. The game and fish, DNR, have the rules so tangled it’s not worth trying anyway. Parts are artificial only, other parts are forbidden, no signs, no markings yet a game warden will say it’s your responsibility to guess correctly.

Unfortunately the Little Kern River doesn't qualify as a Heritage or native drainage, so you missed that one. There are very few tributaries to catch a qualifying "native" Litter Kern Golden. You should have started above the Little Kern where the tributaries begin. You're also in the eastern sierra and not the southern. Your little kern goldens look legit (13:50) since they have head-to-tail spotting, whereas goldens do not. A lot of it truly depends on which creek you were fishing to determine the purity of the strain. The three native strains in that area can very easily be caught in their qualifying native waters with such little hiking it's ridiculous. Kern River Rainbow - 1-4 miles. Little Kern Golden - 1/4 mile. California Golden - from your car window.

some of my most vivid memories are of fishing with my grampa. Now I'm a father of toddlers and I've always been interested in fly fishing. i really appreciate this video and hope that even though I live in Mexico that I will be able to source some affordable beginners gear here and go fishing.

Even if you completed all the bucket lists in your life. If you didn’t find God and Jesus Lord, it’s all futility and pointless. Sure we can enjoy the activities on this earth, but to follow Jesus and do everything for the glory of God it’s completely different.

It is more difficult to be effective with fly. But once mastered so much more rewarding than spin casting no matter what lure
